What a unit can see
LINE OF SIGHT AND VISION RANGE
Each unit sees the state of surrounding terrain or spots enemy
units across the map. An enemy unit will not be shown on the map
until at least one of your units can see it. In order to see an
enemy unit there must be a clear ‘line of sight’ and
it must be within your unit’s vision range. Terrain such as
walls and large objects will block a unit’s line of sight.
Larger units can be seen at a longer range, but smaller units can
only be spotted at a closer range.
FIELD OF VIEW
A unit with no orders will be able to see all around it, and spot
enemy units from any direction. However, a unit which is moving,
firing, or aiming during opportunity fire will only have a field
of vision in front of it (an arc of 150 degrees). It is important
to bear this in mind when plotting your orders, because enemy units
in your blind spots can wreak devastation. The ‘halt’
command is useful when combined with the ‘halt on sighting’
rules of engagement, because a halted unit will have 360 degree
vision.
REVEALING CHANGES TO THE MAP
Although the map is visible at the start of an online or hotseat
game, parts of it may become destroyed. You will not know that terrain
has been destroyed until one of your units spots the area of the
map that has been damaged. The state of doors opening, controls
being activated, doors being unlocked and force fields being activated
are also subject to spotting before the changes are shown in the
map.
HIDDEN MAPS IN THE CAMPAIGN MISSIONS
Most of the maps in the campaign missions will be hidden from view
at the start of the mission. The hidden areas will be blacked out.
As your units explore the map, more of it will be revealed.
THE MACHINA SCANNER
The Machina have a unit called the Scanner, which can detect units
through solid walls, up to a limited range. The Scanner will not
reveal terrain, only enemy units.
