Opportunity fire

Click on the yellow ‘opportunity fire’ button to select opportunity fire mode. This mode is used to anticipate the position of enemy units and quickly fire on them. Select a unit then right click somewhere on the map to specify a direction for opportunity fire. With opportunity fire you do not select a target unit, but a general direction to look for an enemy unit to shoot.

During the results phase a unit with opportunity fire will aim in the direction you specified looking for an enemy unit to shoot. If there is one, the shot will be fired, but if there isn’t the unit will have wasted some time aiming. It is not a direct order to shoot, but an instruction to find an enemy in that direction and shoot if possible. If there is no enemy within the field of view selected (75 degrees either side of the target line), then the unit spends his 'reaction time' looking for a target (on average about a second). If there is a unit in the field of view, then the closer it is to the direction you selected, the less reaction time is expended acquiring the target (see reaction time below).

Correctly anticipated opportunity fire will give your units an advantage because they will get their shot off quicker. However, if you guess wrong, and the enemy unit is outside the field of view of your opportunity fire, the enemy unit may be able to shoot your unit while it is uselessly aiming in the other direction.
